Such places are used for functions such as wakes, weddings, birthday gatherings, religious events, etc. Residents also burn paper offerings on the edge of the pavement next to the small drain (shown on right of picture) during religious occasions.

This sunbird’s nest was hanging on an electrical wire in the corridor outside an HDB flat in Hougang. The sunbird was taking turns with her mate to incubate some eggs.
